Best for
Families with roots in Metro Detroit looking to come back. Remote workers wanting the biggest cost savings on this list. A $150K coastal salary here buys a house, Tri-Share covers two-thirds of childcare, and you're still saving $2K+/month. Anyone in automotive, EV, or mobility tech.
Worth knowing
Auto and home insurance rates are among the highest in the country. Budget for that. Water bills can also run high. Many homes at lower price points are older and may need $30K to $80K+ in renovation. Get an inspection and budget for updates, not just the purchase price. The Land Bank sells lots for as little as $1,000, but rehab costs add up fast. City income tax is 2.4%.
